Laptop to TV connections!

Hello and welcome to Laptop to TV HQ. This site was created to help users get the most out of their laptop. Although it is primarily intended for laptop users, many of the concepts explored here will roll over to desktops as well.

Connecting your laptop to your TV

I have been connecting my laptop to my TV for quite a while now. It is quite easy to complete this connection with a couple of inexpensive cables. You can show your desktop, watch movies, listen to music, or share pictures with the whole family on your big screen. This is much better than huddling the  family around a laptop. There is one downside to connecting this way. Generally the cables used to make this connection are short so you need top put your laptop close to the TV. You can get longer cables but that could get pricey. This is a good solution for some one connecting every now and then, but what about the person who wants to use this connection every day and still wants the use of the laptop while sharing content to the TV? Is there a better way?

I was forced to ponder this question while researching a solution for an auto auction client of mine. They were using the long cables to make the connection to the TV. This caused a problem because the cables where heavy and stretched about 40 feet. It worked, but looked horrible. They wanted to know if there was a wireless solution. Hmmmm?

Wow! Wireless USB Video

After doing a little searching I found out that there is newer technology out there that allows connectivity from a pc or laptop to TV via wireless USB. So, thanks to my client, I was able to test a couple of different units to make these connections. I actually purchased and installed 6 devices. I bought 3 each of two different types. The devices come with a simple USB plug for laptop and small base unit that can connect to your TV via HDMI or VGA. The client was very happy with the wireless solution and up till now has had zero issues with these devices. After this test, I decided to purchase one of these devices for my home.  After installing the wireless USB device, I have been in wireless heaven for over a month. The best part of this is I can surf the web or work while streaming a movie over the wireless USB to my TV while sitting about 20 feet away from the TV. Awesome!!!!  See the solution I bought and why.
